1st HTPC Build (UK, low budget!)
#1
Hi,

Had planned to build one a few months back but never quite managed it...ready to give it another go now! Money not so bad anymore etc. That said, would like to spend as little as possible!

My requirements aren't much - Only care about 2D content, don't play games on PC. Need HDMI out for connecting to a receiver, don't care about bitstreaming HD audio etc though, have a blu ray player for that. Would like to bitstream regular DTS/DD though.

So all I really need is smooth HD 2D playback, and the ability to bitstream standard audio over HDMI.

Would also like to build a NAS, so any suggestions in that area would be great too!

Thanks!

Have had a read - as far as I can tell this most basic one would be fine for my needs?

And I would also need RAM/HDD yes? How much would you suggest. And is there a guide for OpenELEC somewhere, sounds interesting but don't know much about it?

I agree! I just finished building that machine and it works great. So quiet and cool. Go with the same parts on the list(I think Newegg has the MB for a little cheaper right now). I used an Apex MI-001 case from Directron.

I installed a WD green 500GB for system because I'm also using the box for Media Center recording.

Right now I have it set up with xmbc / Media Center using an HD Homerun for the tuner. It even sleeps and wakes using an RC6 IR receiver.

For the price this is a great little htpc. Also throw in an extra $30 and get the Rii mini keyboard .. I love it!

My plan is to build another one and I'd love to see what it would do with an ssd for the system drive.

And finally I need to give a very big thank you to eskro!!! ... his guides are fantastic.
