Accessing medias via SMB or uPnP ? What's the best ?
#1
Hello,

I'm new to XBMC, but already find it fantastic.
I installed it onto Windows PC, and will stream my media over the LAN from a NAS. (onto which Twonkey Media Server is running)

My question is to know what the best solution to define my media files in XBMC.
  • Either as Windows Network (SMB)
  • Either as uPnP devices (with Twkonkey Media)

At first glance I don't see any advantage to select uPnP, but I'm far to be an expert.
I tried both, and it seems that throuhtput with SMB is much faster then with uPnP

Could someone avdance me, what are the pro's and con's of these 2 solutions ?

Thanks
Eugène

SMB is far better than uPnP. Not only is it faster, but uPnP sources can't be scanned into your library.

Thanks Smile

It looks that my NAS is also supporting NFS, and from what I've read in the Wiki, NFS is even more fast then SMB. Right ?

Ah, cue operating system war :-)

You'll have fun getting NFS to work from Windows clients. I would stick to SMB unless you run XBMC on Linux or XBMCLive.

You're right, my sentence was unclear. I meant :

1) I'll run XBMC client with SMB on NAS onto my PC
2) I'll run XBMC client with NFS on NAS onto the Apple TV2 that I'll receive soon

Sorry for the confusion

Try it and see. I'd guess NFS would be faster on an ATV.
