Need Remote For Flirc And XBMC
#1
hi guys i have purchased a few flirc devices and just waiting for them to arrive from the US

i am looking for a remote to use with them and xbmc i want to do pretty much what i can with a mouse such as navigate to movie,tv,etc... go back to main menu or previous screen and also bring up the right click menu to mark shows or movies as watched or to scan a particular folder for new content

does anyone know a good remote for this i am not looking for a real flashy one just a basic remote that will do these functions i am looking for one under
$50 AUD

i have seen on ebay Logitech Harmony 600 for $29

650 for $39

700 for $49

i am not sure if any of these remotes will do what i mentioned above or if they are even good remotes to begin with i have heard the Harmony One mentioned a lot on here but it is 3 times what i want to spend

here is the xbmc wiki http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Rem...ol_Reviews

i also found these original MCE Remotes for $19.90

it doesn't come with the reciever but seeing as i am getting the Flircs it doesn't really matter according to the Wiki these are good

here is a picture of the board saying it is a microsoft one (i think it is the no learning remote though not sure how this effects its use with xbmc)

I use the original MCE remote, I have the learning version, that from what I know of XBMC shouldn't matter. I use the volume controls on my remote and have them reprogrammed to control my Home Theater Receiver. But functionally it should work just fine with XBMC. The remote works great, I use it with the original Microsoft Receiver, so I can't comment on the Flirc. But if it works like it should, you'd be happy with that one.

I know the logitech harmony remotes are excellent, but I haven't gotten around to purchasing one. The media center remote works fine for what we do most the time.

Isn't the whole point of FLIRC that it can learn anything?

Go to walmart, grab the best universal remote that looks pretty.

Program that.

yes it is the point the thing i am trying to figure out though is a way to do more than just activate the navigation controls i want to be able to access the controls to edit or scan the files in xbmc or mark items as watched and i am looking for a remote that has a button that would do this function on a wireless mouse i currently use i simply right click on the folder or file to achieve this

Have you read this thread?

http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=46595

It talks about using EventGhost to reprogram the commands from the remote to do what you want inside XBMC, but..you might not need that if you're using the Flirc

does the microsoft mce remotes with learning function work well i am note sure what they mean when they say no learning as one of the remote i have seen is the microsoft OEM mce remote but comparing to the wiki these ones dont have the microsoft logo down the bottom and under the description on ebay where i found them it says no learning function

they are pretty cheap but before i purchase want to make sure that no learning function doesnt mean i cannot program the remote with flirc or any other methods

on the media center remotes there are 3 buttons that are "learnable" the "TV power button" and the "Vol + and Vol -" (obviously those are only "learnable" on the learning remotes)

they can be programmed from the original remote for the equipment, ie: I used my Samsung TV remote to program my media center remote to power my TV on and off, the volume buttons went to my Onkyo Receiver.

The Flirc is on the other end of that spectrum, you will not be programming the remote, you'll be programming the Flirc (if I'm understanding it correctly) to react to the various commands coming from the media center remote.

Really, you'll have nothing to worry about.
