I've just been using XBMC for a day or so now and want to tweak the main menu. How would I remove the label on the attached image that says "submenu" and "recent"?

That Looks like Aeon, you might want to ask the creator in their forum as this is not a windows only problem

You can do so from within settings/skin settings
