I used old xbox for years just because of the XBMC.
X360 would have power to run almost anything and new hacks like this (
http://hackaday.com/2011/08/29/run-unsig...-any-xbox/ ) would ease the job.
Or has anyone asked if Microsoft would like to help the work, if done properly and legally?

Nope. No team members are working on it, nor are any interested in working on it. So much modern, quieter, smaller, more open, faster (and potentially cheaper) hardware exists that the idea of risking lawsuits and dealing with hardware that is in no way optimized to work with the system seems nonsensical. Sorry.
