i would assume that solid color is the only way to display text?
basically im looking for a way to do something like in this image
so that text would be clear and readable regardless of what color the back drop is at that given moment without the use of a texture behind the text to give it contrast.

any suggestions as to how i could achieve this or something different that would still be as readable would be appreciated

you can add a <shadowcolor> tag to the label control.
