[MOBO+iGPU] ZOTAC GF6100-E-E AM2+/AM2 nForce 430 MCP Mini-ITX ($45 + $0)
[CPU] SEMPRON 145 SDX145HBGMBOX 2.8GHz Single-Core AM3 45W ($43 + $0)
[PSU] CORSAIR CMPSU-430CX 430W 80Plus certified ATX12V ($45 + $0)
[RAM] Kingston ValueRAM 1GB (1x1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 800Mhz CL6 ($13 + $0)
TOTAL: $256

Motherboard Slots & Ports:
----------------------------

PCI Express x1: 1
SATA-II Ports: 4 (note that 1 SATA-II Cable is included in the box)

Case Expansion Bays:
----------------------

External 5.25" Drive Bays: 1
Internal 3.5" Drive Bays: 6

Case Fans:
-----------

Top: 1 x 120mm

Power Supply Connectors:
----------------------------

SATA: 4
MOLEX: 3

Ok, were ready!! let's roll!!

the first 4 HDD's will require 3 SATA-II cables ($2,25) Volume Discounts

the next 2 HDD's will require a 2 Port PCI-Express x1 Sata-II Card ($15)
also needed, 2 SATA-II cables ($2,25) Volume Discounts
also needed, a Molex To 2-SATA Power Connector cables ($4,50)

So, to sum it up, the different levels look like this:

04 HDD's = ($256) + ($2.25 x 3) = $262.75
06 HDD's = ($256) + ($2.25 x 2) + ($4.50 x 1) + ($15 x 1) = $280

(So going from the 4 HDD's Level to the 6 HDD's Level requires an extra $17.25, HDD's not included)

Keep in mind that the 6100-e-e mobo that you have listed only has 4 sata ports and VERY limited expandability (1 PCI-e x1 slot).
For a 6 hdd setup, you would need to add something like this if I am correct. Hopefully the Great and Powerful Eskro will correct me if I'm wrong!

Of course EndiSKy!

to go from the 4HDD's Level to the 6HDD's Level,
you'll need this here --> 2 Port PCI-Express Sata-II Card ($15)
just like explained in my other unRAID build --> Here

the point is, its not about having a 'limited expandability',
its about getting the best low-cost 6HDD's SFF unRAID Server build money can buy!

or if you prefer,
its about getting the best low-cost 6HDD's SFF unRAID PLUS Server build money can buy!

if you need more then 6HDD's, this isnt the build for you!
Again, go with something like this Here instead
which is a regular PC tower which can hold up to 10HDD's,,,

This build is about being Small (SFF)

For anyone that is unsure about UnRaid.... It is ABSOLUTELY the way to go for storage if you have more than 3tb of data or if you want to easily be able to access your data across your network. I was doing external HDD's for the longest time.... this is a whole different way to access your media!

Thx for the writeups Eskro, you make being a noob sooo much easier!

+1 (try it out for yourself for free and you'll see just how easy it is)

No, unraid is not the absolute way to go to access data across a network - 3TB or not.

Be nice if there were lower priced options for the case.....$110 not including PSU is awfully steep for a 'budget' build like this.

Just one Info:
Unraid (corrent working beta) can deal with 3TB drives as well.

Hi Eskro... I think its time to go Unraid.... I am here just wondering what if one of my HD's stops working then all my time and precious work will be gone at least I can have a chance with Unraid.... (doh I still back-up all my pics, music, important stuff to a seperate HD just incase)....

I just need 3 Hard Drives for the moment but might need another in a year or so.

So 4TB and 2TB Parity.... great since the license is free.

Now I do like that LIAN LI PC-Q08B Mini-ITX you listed here it can make a nice little brother to my PC-V352. Now I am wondering how cool are the HD's going to be in that case.

Now do people leave on there Unraid system all the time?
Can it be shutdown by clicking the power button? I need this to be WAF....

I already have a Western Digital Caviar Green WD20EARS 2TB that I can use but it's been hooked up to my Gigabyte Mobo so I guess I need to take off the HPA.... how can I even find out if the HD has HPA in it?

Now what Hard drive is recommended for Parity? My friend has a Caviar Black 2TB that I could use is this a wise choice?

dont mix'up cache drive and parity drive,,,

your parity drive can be any drive
as long as its equal or bigger then your largest storage drive,,,

HPA was if you were thinking of using a Gigabyte Mobo if i recall good...
Hence why they werent recommanded for unRAID,,

the LIAN LI PC-Q08B has a big 140mm Front Fan,
should keep your Green Drives pretty CooL....

oh yeah and,
there's even a 120mm Top Fan to keep hot air from damaging your hardware!!

dont mix'up?

I am not installing a cache drive.... my question on that was will it be good to have the Caviar Black 2TB HD for the parity drive? I know Caviar Black drives get a little hotter but are faster.

Yes HPA might be on my Hard drive that I have now since its hooked up to a gigabyte mobo.... I am not planning to use a gigabyte mobo for the unraid system.

Since servers are meant to be on all the time.. Do you have any idea how much wattage this server would use.. I would upgrade CPU to an AMD dual core and 4 gigs of ram.. Keep the rest the same and prob use 4 hard drives.

Any browser can power down unRAID, telnet commands work, too

And a supermicro board with IPMI could power up unRAID as well

i think u should just go WD green on your 3 drives....
i dont think you'd see any visible benefits....
