WinXP for NAS
#1
Hey guys.

I'm building a NAS with some old PC parts, which will feed my HTPC.
Actually I have a question about NAS and not HTPC, hope that's not a problem.

I read about all the NAS OS, from FreeNAS to unRAID, but I would actually want to have Win XP installed on my NAS system, because I have one unused XP installation. I would share my media files with Windows File Sharing from this guide:
http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=Win...BA/CIFS%29

Is that a bad idea?

I would use my NAS only for media storage and streaming to other windows devices (My own PC, laptop, HTPC with Win7, ...). And I do not need backup system of anykind.
At the moment I have only one HDD, and I intend to buy another one when I fill this one up. (If I understand correctly, you can't do that with FreeNAS.)

Thank you for your help. Smile

Dunno about WinXP...
I would go for Ubuntu, faster, easier, better remote control.
IIRC there might be a harddrive size limitation.

Unfortunately I have no knowledge in Ubuntu that's why WinXP would be good for me Smile

Good to hear. What would you use for remote desktop access? TeamViewer?
Or is there anything "lighter"?

I thought WinXP supports Remote Desktop? I use UltraVNC for most of my machines for remote access, just got used to it way back when and have just been fighting the change.

XP has remote desktop if you have the Pro version. Right click on My Computer, Properties, remote.

Thank you for your answers.
WinXP Pro (NAS) has Remote desktop, but my main computer (WinXP without Pro) hasn't Tongue
I'm using free Team Viewer, so its cool Smile

Tried WinXP, FreeNas and unRAID for servers and I think I will go with WinXP.
I do like unRAID a lot, but torrent support isn't as good as I would like to.
Have some smb sharing problems with WinXP but I intend to fix it Smile

FlexRAID is an alternative with Windows as well. Check it out...
