Finally a worthy AMD mini-ITX CPU??
#1
AMD's A4-3400 APU is ready to ship'ed!

at a $74 price point,
this might be what AMD needed to take some of the HTPC market back from INTEL!

Specifications
Process Type: Dual-Core
Frequency: 2.7 GHz
Integrated Graphics: Radeon HD-6410D
Socket: FM1
Power Consumption: 65 W

A4-3400 CPU Mark --> 1765
E-350 CPU Mark --> 725

So it looks like a Deal to me!!
As strong as a ATHLON X2 250,
but includes an iGPU ready for 3D playback and HD-Audio!
altho not tested, it seems solid to me!

specially good for cramped'up cases like the ANTEC ISK....
altho only 1 miniITX mobo is available currently,,, http://goo.gl/71fgH

once could put together a nice & powerful little barebone mini-ITX build for about ~$240!!
Image
[MOBO] ASRock A75M-ITX FM1 HD-6410D USB3 SATA-III mITX ($90 + $7)
[CPU+GPU] AMD A4-3400 FM1 Dual-Core 2.7Ghz ($74 + $0)
[CASE+PSU] Apex MI-100 Black mITX 250W ($55 + $0)
[FAN] Scythe SY1225SL12L 120mm 800RPM 40.17CFM 10.70dBA ($14 + $0)
TOTAL: ($240)

then add at least 2GB (1x2GB) 1333MHZ CL7 RAM for $18
and maybe also a nice SATA-III SSD Read:520MB/s Write:490MB/s for $75 (after mir)

and you got yourself a wild HTPC for $333!!
O.O
amazing!!

ASUS is coming soon with 2 different FM1 socket'ed mobos http://goo.gl/1PGcy
i'll keep an eye on this Tongue

I've seen this APU yesterday and I think it sounds like a really good solution for any HTPC.

I'm just hoping that Linux support is not far behind this release. I was ready to wait for the E-350 support but now that I'm about to buy (cash inflow on october 13th!), I won't wait another 8 months!

There's also the A4-3300 with a 2.5GHz clock on it and a slower Radeon clock (444MHz vs 600MHz). But the price are so close (~5$) that I don't see why I'd get the A4-3300.

My next purchase is going to be an A4-3400, unless Intel goes batty and releases Ivy Bridge in the next month or so. I'm just waiting on one of the review sites to post a review of this chip before I buy it. (Just to be sure I haven't missed anything)

From what I've seen so far you should be getting the fastest RAM your MB supports if you want to get the best performance out of the on-chip GPU. However I suspect that 1066 RAM will be plenty fast to handle any video playback, even 3D.
HTPC: Win 7 Home 64-bit | MB | CPU | GPU | RAM | Case | PSU | Tuner | HDDs: OS, Media | DVD Burner | Remote
Media server: unraid 4.7 | CPU | MB | RAM | Case | PSU | HDDs: Parity-2TB, Data-2x2TB

oh yeah, 1066 is fast enough!

this HyperX 1333 would be great too --> http://goo.gl/GOl2L

"[...] F1A75-I Deluxe motherboard will become available in Europe at the end of this month, the recommended price tag for it being €109."

From http://www.tcmagazine.com/tcm/news/hardw...ater-month

Some more prices :

160$ US: http://www.amazon.com/Asus-F1A75-I-DELUX...B005M2AQQO
130Euro : http://www.materiel.net/carte-mere-mini-...ode=iconso

Maybe the "recommended price tag" is for the non-deluxe version of the MB.

160$ is too much :/

the asrock is $97 shipped
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813157273

what i see is that the 'DELUXE' version has built-in BT & WiFi + Remote Control,,,,
but that doesnt justify the $60 difference to me,,,

Yeah, it is a steep price. I guess price will come down as more manufacturer produce ITX size MB for the FM1 socket.

Two questions:

1) Aside from the slight increase in cost, what benefit would this have over the A8-3800? the power use figures seem to make it (the 3800) ideal for HTPC use, and the extra oomph would seem handy to have. Does it generate a lot of heat, or something?

2) As heat comes up, has anyone got a recommendation for a good, quiet, ver low profile FM1 cooler? Google is not my friend today and I can find nothing.

It will indeed generate more heat (100W vs 65W TDP). If you go ITX, you don't have a lot of space, which means faster heat accumulation, hence the need for a good airflow. A lot of ITX case comes with 120W Power supply, so you'll have to keep that in mind when you chose your case.

I'm wondering, do you guys think that the A4-3400 will be enough to play 1080p files? I mean without the HW acceleration... ..?

well, i think so, but however,
even if it would need HW ACCEL, who cares!
looks fantastic and priced well!

LIke i said, it looks like its as powerful as an Athlon X2 250!
this means, its perfect perfect perfect for HTPC use and XBMC and Heavy Skins!
Almost twice as fast as a ZACATE E-350!

On http://www.cpubenchmark.net, the A4-3400 score as high as my actual C2D P8400. My C2D is able to play 1080p files without the hardware acceleration.

So, all in all, I'm happy to have no money until october 13th. I'll just swap the Asrock E350 for the A4-3400, and wait for proper HW support under Linux! Smile

edit - There is some slight frame drop though on my C2D without HW accel (but on my workstation, which is bloated to say the least).
