I have been reading up on both of these programs and am trying to figure out why each user would use one or the other. Does one program do a better job at scraping information then the other?

EMM-R works very well for me. No experience with MediaCompanion.

They both work well. I'm currently on MC as it saves actor thumbs. I was never able to figure this out on EMM. Maybe I'm just slow.

MC has, since v2, always had issues for me... major ones. I try it every few months but it is just too buggy, and the UI is not nearly as user friendly as EMM-r.
EMM-r has just always worked.
I hope EMM-r development continues (someone just started working on it again) and I will continue using it.
