1080 or 720

I am using the Epson 8350 projector on a 144" screen.

My question is, although most of my movies are in 720p format, my projector is capable of 1080p output.

Is there any benefit of running XMBC at 1080p even though the videos will not be at that resolution? Will the menu or the movies be smoother?...

Normally it's best to run XBMC at the native resolution of your display device so you get a precise 1:1 pixel mapping. For example, my TV is 1080p so I run my HTPC at 1080p.

In general, though I suppose it could depend on your HTPC, whether the HTPC is running at 1080p or 720p resolution will make little difference to XBMC.

Well, the laptop only has a 1200x800 resolution, so if I am duplicate I'm stuck there. If I go projector only I can go max res.

XBMC does better upscaling than most TVs and projectors (although 720 -> 1080 is a trivial scaling).

The biggest benefit of outputting 1080p though is when you are playing back something that is not a 720p source. Consider:

720p source: scaled to 1080 (either by XBMC or projector).

1080p source: scaled to 720 by XBMC then 1080 by projector vs no scaling.

480p source: scaled to 720 by XBMC then 1080 by projector vs scaled to 1080 by XBMC.

It is always better to do fewer scalings, which means it is always going to be better to output at the native resolution of the display device.

The projectors native resolution is 1920x1080.

Then run at 1080p.
