[Apple TV 2] No 5.1 sound...only PCM 2.0
#1
Hi,

found a lot of topics...but no solution so far.

I purchased an appletv2 last month 4.3 (2557) on it.
I jailbreaked with SeasonPass.
Installed nitoTV and xbmc 10.0-9.

TV is connected via HDMI.
Reciever is connected via Optical Cable. (Reciever is DTS capable, no AC3)
I can not connect ATV2 via HDMI to reciever because it has no HDMI input nor output...

I have tried different setups in ATV2 and XBMC...

ATV:
digital sound: ON
Audio Output: Auto/16bit (tried both)
HDMI: AUTO (no other option available)

XBMC:
Output: 5.1
Reciever capable: DTS
Reciever capable: AC3
Downmix: 2.0 yes/no (tried both)

If I put AC3 on, there is only some kind of cracking noise...
So removed AC3 option...sound ok but only PCM 2.0.

I tried with different movies coded MKV and AAC 5.1, AC3 5.1...

I tried 5.1 Podcasts, they also play only in PCM 2.0

When I start ATV2 and watch a trailer from iTunes store on ATV2 there is also no 5.1 sound.
Do I have to rent a movie to try out 5.1...I have the feeling there will still be no 5.1 sound...
Is this the only way to try it out?

Greetings

right setup for you imho would be:

in atv2: 16bit audio on

in xbmc:

5.1 capable receiver for both ac3 and dts and output set to optical/coax. Downmix no.

This doesn't work?

Hi,

In ATV2-Menu I put

DolbyDigital .... ON
Audio Output ... 16 Bit
HDMI Output ... Auto (only option I have)

In XBMC -> System -> Options -> System -> Audio-Hardware:

Audio Output ....... Optical/Koaxial
Speaker .............. 5.1
Volume Downmix ... NO
-Reciever Capable AC3 .... YES
-Reciever Capable DTS .... YES
Audio Output Device ... Default (only option)

ATV2 blacked out, when putting Audio to 16 Bit again...

Wait!!!!
No way!!!

ITS WORKING!!!!!! IT IS!!!!! Unbelievable!!!!

After a reboot it accepted the 16 bit AND the AC3, which it didnt accept the last 2 days...
I spent 5 hours on that shit! And another 2 today...

GREAT!!! Thank you very very much!!!

Only issue, i get a "service.py" Error every

Probably from an add-on that needs updating. The TV Guide add-on seems to be a common bugger for giving that error message on iOS.

I have exact the same settings, but can't get my reciever to switch to 5.1DD. Tried several times and movies. All i hear is a crackling sound over HDMI from my TV. DD-Reciever is still 2.0PCM. Sad
Optical Cable and DD5.1 from old XBMC (Xbox1) is working fine.

@Solo0815

I had the Same cracking Noise. And i still have no 5.1 Sound on ATV Side.
I Found a couple of guys who had to Rent an Episode of The Simpsons for 99 Cent,
To get the 5.1 to work...STRANGE!!!! And Even more, There is no Simpsons
In the iTunes Store for the ATV...or at least, I cant find it.

I Read a couple of threads, wherein People having Trouble especially with the
ATV an a Marantz Receiver...

Still, the above settings are the only ones working for me, at least on the XBMC Side.
And getting there, caused the ATV to Crash several Times, specially when putting it to
16bit and switching to AC3

I never had to rent anything to make it work. I don't see any technical reason for that, so I assume it's an urban myth or similar.

And my ATV works just fine with my Marantz receiver (NR-1601) for everything that I've played (includes AC3 and DTS surround).

I had the same issue. Strange enough I installed aTV Flash Media player from firecore and it managed to play DD and 5.1 sounds without and mods. Now went back into XBMC played the same movie which gave me a hissing noise over HDMI. Alas it plays in DD sound. Now uninstalled aTV Flash Media player, reboot Atv2. Went back in XBMC, played the same file ->Hissing sound again.
Now installed aTV Flash Media player again and guess what, XBMC nows plays in 5.1 Surround sound.

its commercial and you can buy it on http://www.firecore.com.

But before trying that you just should double check that the audio setting in the atv2 itself is set to 16bit, when experiencing static noise in XBMC.

Normally this setting fixes the noise - no need for media player ...

I checked the setting 4567345738 times.
16bit Audio, tried also all other settings. My reciever still doesn't recognize 5.1 and puts out static noise over HDMI. DD Reciever is connected over optical Out from ATV2
