Can't resume/skip and sometimes play videos in RAR archives
#1
It's multipart RAR archives.

The error happens practically instantly if I start playing and skip 30-40 mins into a 40-50 min video.
When the error skip/resume (not from pause) error happens it'll never work again to resume at X min or skip past X min. "Play from beginning" only works if I restart XBMC, resume/skipping will still fail.

I didn't have this problem a few months ago. Or maybe it was pre Dharma? I'm not really sure.

-I've tried using Homegroup instead of SMB.
-I've been using 10.1. I've tried 10.0 and a clean install with XBMCSetup-20111106-c68ef0b-master
-The files in archives plays/resumes/skips fine if I extract them.
-Playing the file locally introduces the same error.
-I tried on another PC. Same issue.

I don't get it. Either a file is shared and it's playable, or it's not. How it can "work a little"?

So... what's the issue? Why keep the files rar'ed unless you are still file sharing them?

I don't unpack archives. I did it just to test it.
I don't see how's it ontopic anyway. XBMC allows playing videos in RAR archives. It won't work properly for me.

We use an open source library for handling rars, and the library isn't without its bugs. I suspect something in the handling of multipart rars is breaking. If you enable debug logging (System settings, System, Debugging) the log file might be more help.

Sorry about that. It's been quite a while since I've done a debug log.

Here's a real debug log (filename test.mkv)

Ah, yes, after a few BigStepsForward there's an error:

774. 18:07:12 T:2688 ERROR: XFILE::CFile::Read : Access violation at 0x01767337: Reading location 0x05ebe063

This looks very much like a bug in the rar library: well obviously it's a bug since the code shouldn't generate an access violation under any circumstances. I would try unpacking and repacking the rar to see if that helps.

I'm sorry, but it's pants-on-head retarded to keep your movie files rar'ed for no reason. Doesn't matter if XBMC supports it or not.

Ned, you can be unnecessarily confrontational at times. Using rars is not a religion, and even if it was that's still no reason to go looking for pieces of wood to nail people to.

What do you mean "bug in the rar library"? Corrupt archive?

-utorrent hash is correct and unpacking works fine.
-No problems skipping/resuming with Mediaportal.

Same error with these ones:

I assume "rar library" is referring to the "software module" (for a lack of a better term) inside XBMC. In other words, not the rar file.

I'm not trying to be a dick here when I say it's better to un-rar the videos when you're just storing them. There are reasons why un-rar'ing is a good idea.

If you don't need to re-share the file, just un-rar it. It makes things easier to organize, reduces the number of steps XBMC takes to play it (and thus the number of possible errors/bugs, like here), makes scraping easier to manage (when dealing with multi-part rar's) when you are using custom RegEx, and often people will use compressed rar's which can make your computer work harder than it needs to (without saving any significant file space, or any). Plus it makes it easier to play in other media players other than XBMC that might not have rar playback support.

On the other hand the only reason to keep the file rar'ed is if you are still sharing it to other users.

No. That's not the only reason. TV Shows are in my RSS feed. They get downloaded as soon as released. Spending time to unpack every episode, instead of just turning XBMC on a watch it, is as you like to say retarded and time wasting.

I guess the only reason I haven't noticed this before is because I used to watch episode from start to finish. Also it doesn't happen on all episodes.

Sorry, I forgot "being a lazy ass" is also a reason. There are a number of great programs mentioned in the supplemental tools forum that will automate this for you, so even that isn't really a reason.

Remember, just because you can doesn't mean it's a good idea.
