I've had this problem under Windows after some updates(i guess, as it just didn't work anymore suddenly)
and now also under Linux, with a completely new profile folder i still have got the same problem:
In the lower right corner, the Video codec flag isn't shown anymore, insted there is just an empty space...
But when I play a file and press 'i' for the info panel, the video codec flag ist shown without problems, so it's most probably no texture error
