Building a New HTPC
#1
Im looking to build a new HTPC, running Windows 7

Im looking to play 720p, 1080p, full surround sound, DTS, run XBMC smoothly and quickly. I don't want any lag at all.

I happened to find these pieces and was wanting everyone's opinion on them. Items were found on craigslist for a pretty good deal

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820231277

Can pick all of that up for $200. All I would need is an SSD, case and an IR/remote.

Let me know what other recommendations or opinions you might have.

Looking to build the best HTPC that I can.

hmmm... not bad at all,,, but its second hand stuff right?

since u plan on using WIn7, u may take a look at the new AMD APU's!
example, try to create a build based on the LIano A8-3850 APU!
Here's a complete build for you...

CPU/iGPU: http://goo.gl/hrUOg $135
COOLER: http://goo.gl/PnFrH $33
MOBO: http://goo.gl/71fgH $90
CASE/PSU: http://goo.gl/XfEs1 $50
FAN: http://goo.gl/8PNVK $14
SSD: http://goo.gl/uZkl4 $70
RAM: http://goo.gl/ZDFog $40
IR Kit: http://goo.gl/Z118p $25

TOTAL: $457 Shipped!!

overall, extremely strong HTPC!!
and it'll power ON from a total shutdown state using the Remote!!

check this video made by user named voip-ninja!
** note that video is based on the dual-core A4-3400
which is way less powerful then the quad-core A8-3850!! **

+1 for a complete apu system. i think that you meant to write liano a8-3850 apu!
>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC

I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

I've never ventured into used computer parts for building a complete system. IMO you would essentially be risking $200 in a gamble that everything works and for how long?
Its hard to know the provenance of the items, how well they have been cared for, etc. Stolen by a crackhead near you? Who knows?
What you describe is not a complete set so you likely would still need little things like wires and all so your cost does not stop at $200.
I like escro's suggestion way more and it is a MUCH better value and performer.
My first HTPC build
My UnRaid Server
Kingston rebates and ASUS warranties are WORTHLESS FRAUDS

Awesome, thanks for all the help so far.

Eskro I have known about the new APU for a bit now. Will definitely have to look into them.

I will do some research and let you all know what I decide to do.

Will also take pics of the build and my results on it.

Also will that HTPC be able to handle the heavier based resource skins like aero? Have everything transition smoothly

Yes that HTPC will handle everything.

Should I stick with the mini ITX version of this setup? or go with the micro ATX version to get some expansion slots for the future?

Would I need a discrete graphics card to get support for the 23.976Hz refresh rate and to get better compatability with free and open software video decoders?

Can the A8-3850 also Bitstream DOLBY TRUE-HD & DTS-HD MASTER audio or will I again need to get an discrete graphics card and use a micro atx build?

yes, by default, the A8-3850 can Bitstream TRUE-HD & DTS-HD MA audio!

no need for a separate GPU card has it'll handle 23.976Hz refresh rate without issues!

if you should go for miniITX or MicroATX is really up to you,
i cant decide for you...

i currently use a microATX htpc and my next one would definitely be a miniITX build...
