not sure what you have tried so far but afaik when you plug in a device that is seen as a hard drive then the files on it are mappable to xbmc (i.e- if you plug in a camera/ mp3 player (except for ipod) you should be able to navigate to it thru the menus -- works for my archos av500 dvr).

laptops are slightly harder but i setup my blu-ray player to use wifi thru the ethernet connected to my xbmc-box:

each laptop you connect to it would have to enable sharing somehow (i dont use windows or mac so not sure). but i use sshfs to connect xbmc-live to my fedora server upstairs via wifi.

Leave the money in a brief case at the park, third bench from the drinking fountain. Unmarked 2-dollar bills. Come back in 5 days and you will find a brown paper bag under the same bench.

I kid I kid. The devs are really busy right now getting Eden (the next version of XBMC) ready, which is why you probably haven't heard back yet.

thanks i am exploring to see the functionality of the core install and to see if there is a way that i can achieved the desired result with out dev work. however this alternative is not showing promise
