USB TOSlink device
#1
My PC that runs XBMC Live 10.1 doesn't have an optical out so I picked one of these USB devices up to try:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/External-Sound-C...cr_pr_pb_t

It was a bit of a longshot if it worked out of the box but I have a strange problem - if I connect it to the PC and then boot XBMC Live it just freezes, if I boot up and then connect it nothing happens.

Has anyone tried one of these on XBMC Live and got it working?

Sorry, I completely forgot to add that....

It's a Small Form Factor Dell Optiplex 745 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dell_OptiPlex) running XBMC Live 10.1

As for the USB Toslink device, it has no details on it at all, but there's loads of them all identical on amazon & ebay. I've tested it on a laptop running win7 and it works fine.

If I can't get this to work, are there any recommended USB add ons to get a TOSlink connection on this?

Thanks.

I got a nagging suspicion it might have to do with a linux boot issue, but I got no way to confirm it. does win7 boot fine on same pc with the device attached ?

I don't know - the PC only has XBMC live on it. I've been looking at maybe putting an internal sound card in, but being small form my choices are a bit limited. This one doesn't cost too much and looks alright: http://www.ebuyer.com/246650-asus-xonar-...m=products

I bought a usb soundcard for an analog only machine I have:

I'm running openelec and it works out of the box - all I had to do was to plug it in and switch to optical in the xbmc audio gui.

I used to have something very similar from Dealextreme - it worked just fine under Ubuntu 9.04 to 10.04. Didn't need it anymore after that, though.
