I have read the "what group are you in" suggestions in Eskro's wonderful thread. However I feel like I fall into a different group. Here is what I am looking for...

* 720p HDTV possess HDMI ports
* wants to play SD movies (DivX, XviD)
* wants to play DVD movies - really not that important
* wants to play 720P movies
* wants to run an image intensive skin and it to be snappy as shit
* wants to stream 1080p and 720p movies from NAS to xbmc rig and play in 720p with no jerky shit.
* wants decent sound output, nothing crazy, but I'd like RCA outputs because I'm running the sound to my stereo receiver not my TV thru HDMI.

I have a TV that is 720p. I have a tons of movies on a NAS half are in 720p and half are 1080p.

1. Will an xbmc rig play a 1080p movie on a 720p TV?

2. If so, does the picture look worse than if it was playing the same movie in 720p?

3. Does an xbmc rig have to work harder to play a 1080p movie on a 720p resolution TV?

So, Eskro, or you other wizards, is there a build that you would suggest to fit the above scenario? I'm not worried about future proofing with this rig. I just want it to handle the above situations flawlessly.

Probably this is fine: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?p=841972

Your biggest problem is going to be your snappy as shit image intensive skin. 720/1080p is a standard. If it were that, I'd be saying you probably need an Aton/ION. But the skins tend to be problemsatic for most.

I'd also suggest an SSD for your OS drive for best skin performance.

For sound, you can do optical or you may need some 1/8" to RCA cables if you can't do that.
