Price/Performance rundown of the new AMD APU's

There's a really good review of the A8 on Missing Remote from yesterday;

http://www.missingremote.com/review/amd-...otherboard

He was generally pleased with the performance of the platform, but did notice some issues with the AMD GPU and color-space and luminance. I am going to have to evaluate myself when my parts show up to see how big of a deal it is to me.

He also experienced one BSOD when resuming the system from standby, with the memory dump clearly indicating that the AMD chipset drivers were the culprit. He could not reproduce the problem though.

voip-ninja Wrote:The entire attraction of these new APU is that even the weakest of them (3400 for example) should be capable of full 1080P playback at 23.976 with bitstream audio and no frame loss. If it can do that and doesn't have any weird driver glitches, I will be a happy guy.

keep us up 2date!!

Here's a review showing the power consumption of the A8-3800 and A8-3850 vs. lots of other chips.

AMD's A8-3800 Fusion APU

The results show...
_____________Idle________Load
A8-3800______38w________93w
A8-3850______39w_______124w
i3-2100_______34w________71w

Note: the review actually has results showing that when using the same ATX PSU the e350 and D525 actually draw more power than all three of the chips above. That one makes me scratch my head a little.Huh
HTPC: Win 7 Home 64-bit | MB | CPU | GPU | RAM | Case | PSU | Tuner | HDDs: OS, Media | DVD Burner | Remote
Media server: unraid 4.7 | CPU | MB | RAM | Case | PSU | HDDs: Parity-2TB, Data-2x2TB

Is it safe to say that these chips will do 1080p HD Netflix? And just to confirm, they DO proper 1080/24p?

Is there any reason why these are not the preferred HTPC build on your charts, Eskro?

What about the Netflix HD? that's the only thing my Zotac ION/ATOM isn't doing for me. :-\

Looking at this with drool coming out of my mouth:
MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6813157260
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6817194038
RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820148419
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6819103957
CASE: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6811163174
SSD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820220580

Haven't done any price shopping yet, because it's already under $300 before adding in the SSD... that SSD is a steal btw - $45 after MIR!

EDIT: There is also this SSD, $5 cheaper, but about 50% slower. The out-of-pocket though is $39.99 without MIRs to hassle with, so that's attractive.

This new APU's are starting to become very interesting to me. Hopefully they will play at 100% and no more of a need for a GPU. I guess time will tell and hopefully it makes it to eskros list.

You've got almost everything right to meTongue

in my opinion,
i would swap the PSU you selected with this $47 ANTEC NEO ECO 400W!!
They are manufactured by SeaSonic,
which means,
yout getting the best of the best in PSU market!!

about the SSD, stick to PAtriote Torqx2...
trust me, avoid OCZ like the plague!!
i had to buy an SSD today,
PAtriote Torqx2 would be my choice hands down!!

oh yeah, another thing, the CPU,
i know its $30 more, but, i strongly suggest you get the $100 triple-core AMD A6-3500
crazy horsePower you wont regret it!!
