When you convert the high-def MKVs to DVD, they won't be high-def anymore. I really suggest buying a blu-ray player that can play enything you throw in it. Like LG. BTW in terms of decoding, h.264 and x.264 are the same.

I would vote for getting a BD player too and replace those ancient dvd players.
