Thoughts on SD card as a hard drive
#1
Looking to put together a machine to access my server so storage space is not needed on the machine itself. With hard drive prices what they are right now wondering your thoughts on using a SD card as the hard drive for Windows 7 install.

Looking at this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820313167

Read Speed: Up to 15~20MB/s
Write Speed: Up to 13~18MB/s

If that will work was looking at this budget build

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6856119060

$109.99

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6820231307

$20.99

Total of $167.97

Will work but I think that the problems are with sequential read write that the speed drops significantly...

Your best bet if you can is to try a USB flash drive and run OPENELEC which is designed to be run off a USB!

I unfortunately have no idea on how to install W7 to SD tho :S :O

Exactly - OpenELEC is great at this, but I wouldn't run any "real" OS off of an SD card.

You could do it with a CF card using a CF->SATA adapter, but that's a lot more expensive than just an SDHC card...

There's also lifetime to think about. That type of memory has a significantly lower average number of writes before failure than a HDD or SDD, not designed for a regular OS.
