xbmc hangs

Hi,
I recently installed xbmc 10.1 on my new laptop, it worked perfectly for a week or so. But all of a sudden it wouldn't start up any more. I fixed it by doing a "clean reinstall" of xbmc, but again after some time it wouldn't start up any more. Reinstalling doen't work anymore. I have read all the post with the same symptoms but none of the solutions worked for me. I would have uploaded a log file but xbmc doesn't even come as far as creating one. Now after some digging into my laptop I found 4 crash reports coming from windows, all simular so i uploaded one.

http://pastebin.com/c0szR2wC

Symptoms:
- i can run other programs after attemting to start xbmc but with extreme lag
- when using ctrl+shift+esc the laptop will open task manager, but it is immediately in "not responding" mode so i can not see if xbmc process is running, but i guess it is
- After attempting to start xbmc i mostly have to use the power button to shut off the laptop, otherwise it takes much longer then normal.
- I only have this problem with xbmc wich is why i post it here

Does anyone know what is causing xbmc to stop/not start communicating with windows?

Any help will be greatly appreciated
Tom

By running XBMC with the '-p' flag, you can keep everything in the local drive, and avoid the roaming folder, not that it will help your situation... but the idea is to get you back-up and running to the point that a debug log makes sense.

The fact that XBMC ran for 10 days without issues, and a subsequent re-install worked, points at something else. Now re-installs don't work for you but I suspect that you have not uninstalled it completely. It looks like your running win7/64 and you would have to clean out C:\Users\YOURNAME\AppData\Roaming\XBMC as well as your 'C:\Program Files (x86)\XBMC.

Since i updated to Eden there have been some changes in my stiuation:
-I now have crash logs
-I can not run any other programs anymore when xbmc hangs (not even cmd), I always have to use the power button to shut down
-The crash logs tell me that XBMC runs fine for about 3 seconds, then it start to hang
-The only times when XBMC will succesfully start, is when i just booted my laptop (although it doesn't always do the trick)
-I found two different types of crash logs, meaning that every log is identical to one of these two, i uploaded them

http://pastebin.com/SGuXmTKN
http://pastebin.com/TTcPmV5z

although the following 2 lines are the end of the first log, they cannot be the cause, as the log also contains them when XBMC does start.
ERROR: CRemoteControl::Connect - failed to connect
INFO: CRemoteControl:Tonguerocess - failed to connect to irss, will keep retrying every 5 seconds

I've been having this problem too on my laptop. What laptop do you have, tom1993? Mine is Dell XPS 14z.

I have posts about it in this thread: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=129173

Unresolved. Sad

Wigash, you say you have two graphics cards. Same on my laptop. An nVidia one and an Intel HD one also. I wonder if this is related?

I am starting to feel a connection too, i have 2 video cards installed
-Intel® HD graphics 3000
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M

I have an ASUS X53SV

Surely this is related. Mine is:

-Intel® HD graphics 3000
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M

and noodles78 from another thread has:

-Intel® HD Graphics Family
-NVIDIA GeForce GT 520MX

and Wigash says his setup is:
-Intel HD Graphics 3000
-AMD Radeon 6770M

I've tried disabling one of these at a time, but it still hangs. I wonder could it be related to the audio cards? Can you post which ones you have? Mine are:

-Intel® Display Audio
-Realtek High Definition Audio

I know these are probably extremely common, but I'll try disabling these to rule them out.

EDIT: tom1993, can you disable Intel® Display Audio if you have it in Device Manager under Sound controllers and see if that helps? XBMC has loaded five times in a row here for me with no hangs after I disabled that.

I just finished trying to disable the Nvidia card, no luck there, Nvidia is not the problem.
I am not even trying to start xbmc after disabling the intel HD graphics as windows boots up semi-unusable when i do that

I'll give the sound cards a go

EDIT: Forgto to tell, I have those exact audio drivers as well
EDIT 2: The intel display audio driver is not the problem eather (got 1 succes, 3 freezes)

Something must have changed on my system, as I haven't seen this hang for a day or two (touch wood)

I'm using the latest XBMC 12 nightlies from here: http://mirrors.xbmc.org/nightlies/win32/

Not sure if it's been fixed in these?

I have installed the latest nightly build now, it works everytime, thanks for the hint!
This is my first experience with nightly builds, but I assume it is normal that it runs a bit less smooth than stable ones right?
with less smooth I mean that the cover art and fanart load slower in the library.

That's great, so this issue is fixed! Smile

I had installed a nightly build two weeks ago and XBMC was still hanging. Seems its fixed in the more recent ones.

I don't know much about these nightlies either, I think the cover art and fanart has to be re-cached or something after upgrading to the XBMC 12 nightlies, maybe it'll get smoother the more you use it.
