I got unstable up and running, only problem is that it doesn't boot straight into xbmc like it used to. If I go to an ssh session and startx& it will boot fine. I am using my custom user when I do that.

Any idea how to get it to start automatically?

I actually JUST figured it out and was coming back to post what I did...however, your link explains it too.

which gives the same init script that worked fine for me. I DID have to change my username in the init script.
