They're not out yet, but you can bid on one of the pre-release versions Big Grin

Don't know how your thread got high-jacked, but that is a great announcement/idea. Could mean adding roku functionality to the xbmc platform.

Hi Eskro,
I have already seen this... looks awesome also... same chip as the Roku and all...
I like Roku better though as you don't even have to draw ANY cables... and it has MHDL.
MHDL: "1080p HD video; digital audio; DC power for powering an external device; and signaling, so the TV can control and communicate with the external device (for example, so the TV’s remote can control the device’s operation).

Break the Roku (open and install XBMC on the SD-card inside) and we will have a mobile XBMC that as easily as a USB stick can be unplugged, put in your pocket and showed off at e.g. your friends place...:-) !!!

This thing looks badass. It would be truly amazing if this Roku was hacked to run XBMC. Just plug into the back of your TV and stream content from your NAS Smile

Exactly...:-)
And with support for MHDL RemoteControls - this is all we need...:-)

Lets see if we can find link(s) to have a look at the hardware inside, when it arrives sometime 2nd half 2012...

It didn't mention DTS-HD/TrueHD. If it cannot bitstream HD audio, it isn't for me!
>Alienware X51- do it all HTPC
>Simplify XBMC configurations
>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

No, it doesn't say in this announcement...
On the official MHDL homepage (http://www.mhlconsortium.org) you can read about what the standard supports (not the same as saying that Roku's hardware/software will support this though... but on the other hand, I think adopters have to support the full standard...!)

http://www.mhlconsortium.org/about/FAQs.aspx
(4. What are the main features of this and how is it optimized for mobile phone and portable devices?)
Products implementing the MHL specification will feature:

HD Video and Digital Audio
Consumers will be able to experience HD video content with up to 1080p/60 picture quality, and digital audio up to 192 kHz and capable of delivering 7.1 channel surround sound from their mobile device.
Utilization of Existing Connectors
The MHL specification gives manufacturers the flexibility to utilize widely established connectors available in today’s mobile and CE products.
Low Pin-Count Interface
HD video and digital audio are enabled with only a 5-pin interface while at the same time providing control and power, which along with utilizing existing connectors allow mobile devices to maintain their small form factor and keep implementation costs low.
Provision of Power to the Mobile Device
The MHL specification enables operation of the mobile device in MHL mode while 5 volts and 500 mA of power are simultaneously provided from an HDTV or other CE device. For example, a mobile phone can play back a full-length movie on an HDTV without draining power, so the mobile phone can continue to be used for other purposes, such as calls and emails.
Content Protection
The MHL specification fully supports High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection (HDCP) technologies for the safeguarding of high-value digital motion pictures, television programs and audio against unauthorized interception and copying.

So even-though the site lacks information about bitrate (should be 24bit to my knowledge) - my best guess is that the Roku Stick will also support DTS-HD/TrueHD Big Grin

More info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High...ition_Link

Would be nice to get hands on the MHL 1.0 specification (need adopter signup and payment...).
It would perhaps give the possibility to start implementation/configuration of the RC keymaps.xml already... Smile

XBMC could even become the preferred option for some manufacturers (easy customisation of skin and add-ons) - maybe that is a "little" far-fetched... but who knows Wink

Hi Maymann - Are you saying it is possible to install XBMC on Roku via the SD-card? If so, can you please elaborate (details, instructions, etc.)?

Thanks!

Hi Louier79,

Roku Streaming Stick is not released yet, but estimated guess is sometime 2nd half 2012.
I'm guessing that there will be some kind of memory module inside - and hopefully it will be easily removable and use a widely used e.g. micro-SD or similar.

Already now, MHL RCP (Remote Control Protocol) keymaps.xml (use TV remote as XBMC remote...!) could start implementation... if someone has access to the specification... Smile !

I would really like to see XBMC support for this stick - as in my mind, this is the perfect HW for XBMC (absolutely NO cables...!) and is even expected to be cheap at the same time ($50-100)...Smile !
