What's the difference between /var/mobile/bla

and

/private/var/mobile/bla...

and which one contains the sources.xml I should edit

Having real trouble getting sources.xml to operate (I like to edit on in nano via ssh).

all tips appreciated - confused.

Code:
Apple-TV:/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata root# pwd
/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata
Apple-TV:/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata root# ls
Database/  RssFeeds.xml  addon_data/      keymaps/          peripheral_data/  profiles.xml
LCD.xml    Thumbnails/   guisettings.xml  mediasources.xml  playlists/        sources.xml
Apple-TV:/private/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata root# cd /var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata/
Apple-TV:/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata root# ls
Database/  RssFeeds.xml  addon_data/      keymaps/          peripheral_data/  profiles.xml
LCD.xml    Thumbnails/   guisettings.xml  mediasources.xml  playlists/        sources.xml
Apple-TV:/var/mobile/Library/Preferences/XBMC/userdata root#

They are the same directory. There is a symbolic link somewhere in the path.
You also need to install nano or vim using apt-get install

Dont edit it as root, use user mobile instead or dont forget to chown the userdata folder afterwards to avoid permission problems.

aha, that could explain the problems I've been having, i was editing as root.
How do i login as mobile - what's the password.
how do i fix any permissions i might of borked ?

this was my first post here since 1996 - so amazing that xbmc keeps going strong - back then it was on a modded xbox now it's ATV2 of course (considering buying a second and setting up shared database for the library).

cheers
