HOW-TO:Install XBMC on Apple TV1
#1
I tried 3 time to install XBMC on my ATV1 (software version 3.0.2) following the steps on the link

http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=HOW...nal_ATV_OS

"Power on your Apple TV 1 and wait for the picture of a Penguin (Tux) sitting on an Apple TV 1. If you do not see this picture when you boot up, and the Apple TV 1 just boots up normally, you may need to create a new USB drive patchstick using a different USB drive (preferably using a different brand). Sometimes some USB drives don't work for booting. You can also use memory cards and a USB reader in place of a typical USB drive."

I created a new USB drive patchstick using 3 different USB drive ( using a different brand).
I used 2 different PC (XP, Vista) using The Windows XP/Vista interim solution atv-win-3.0

There is slightly different information on this link
http://code.google.com/p/atvusb-creator/...stickGuide

The additional step is:

"Now that you have a flash drive with the modified image on it, you need to put it in the Apple TV. Hold MENU and - buttons while doing this to force the Apple TV to begin the recovery process. This will kick off the search for mass storage devices with recovery information"

I wonder if someone can give me a clue whats wrong?
What should I do for the USB sticks to be recognized by AppleTV ?
Do you need to hold the MENU and - buttons or you don't?
Is a better way is to plug the USB stick into the USB port While the AppleTV is booting, in the first few seconds of the boot process?
can you use a Windows machine to format the USB drive as FAT32, or it need Apple computer with Mac OS for the format and the creation of the Patchstick?

Thanks,

Josh

To be totally honest, I gave up on using my Apple TV 1 with Apple's OS.

Check out Crystalbuntu..it runs XBMC very well!

holding buttons down is not required for patching. If one USB drive does not work then try another.

The ATV Creater does what it needs to for the USB Stick, when I done this to my Apple TV1 I had to reboot it by holding "menu -" this makes the Apple TV1 box reboot into recovery and when you have the usb stick plugged in will patch the box, once the reboot has completed restart the box normally then you should see an additional menu item in frontrow...
