[ATV2]Can't play back mpeg4 DVB-streams
#1
Hi

Problem: When I try to play back a mythtv-recording in DVBT MPEG4 (danish aerial) I get no picture only sound while XBMC GUI is still visible and usable.

Turning off HW-acceleration a get picture, but at a very slow framerate.

MPEG2 DVBT recordings it handles just fine.

I'm using Apple TV 2 v4.4.4 with XBMC 11.0beta1 Git:20111222-22ad8e4

The only thing I can see is the 50fps. I think that the hardware decoding does not support it.

Software decoding will not handle the resolution either.

Sure hope it's not the hardware - bought it for the specific purpose of playing back tv-recordings.

But your 50fps gave me another clue to google... seems there are an open ticket (http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/11587) for an almost similar problem.

My ATV2 wouldn't playback transport streams from DVB-T2 recordings either. I'd know that de-interlacing is intensive but I'd read that h264 was decoded in hardware so I hoped it would work.

The files I recorded were of Frozen Planet 1440x1080i@50fps. If these recordings will be usfull to anyone I'll upload a 5min cut.

Hardware decode doesn't do deinterlacing. You should keep in mind that atv2 is made from apple for playing itunes movies. Its very unlikly that you find anything interlaced there. So they left it out...

I re-encoded them to 720p. But for things that I want to watch once and not have archived it's a bit of long winded process.

It's a shame that the ATV2 doesn't quite tick all the boxes, roll on ATV3 Wink

Memphiz,

The original posters file was not interlaced but 50hz progressive scan. Do we have a problem with that for the same "we don't need to do it" reason?

Well at least it doesn't seem to work. We would know more if someone could give as the official api documentation from apple - but unfortunatly this will not happen - at least if we don't get some sort of undercover agent into it Wink

For what i have seen so far the nearer h264 media is to the itunes movies the best it seems to work with xbmc on atv2 too :/ - and they are non interlaced and non 50fps.

I think this is the same problem as described here:
http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=95495

And this is the related Ticket:

@Duduke

Never heard of TVHeadEnd, but looks interesting. But I guess I'd have the same issues.

I'm using MythTV myself. I'm building a new backend and I might have a look into TVHeadEnd - looks like there's better support in XBMC.
