You could try a Flirc for the remote setup. If your G4 just has USB 1.1 ports instead of 2.0 I'm not sure if it will work. Never tried it on the old PPC Macs.

Edit: Though now that I think about it that probably won't work as I don't think the G4 has the built in IR receiver.

Flirc would work just fine since it simply emulates a USB keyboard. USB 2 is backwards compatible with USB 1 for things like keyboards.
