Fileshare from OSX Lion Mac to Apple TV2

Sad
Hiya guys
I've tried to find how to do this by searching but i can't seem to find a good guide so i thought id make a thread.
Im running a macbook pro with lion installed and all available updates and a jailbroken Apple TV2 on 5.0.1.
I store all of my media on an external HDD which is connected to my mac. The hard drive is partitioned into a back up and media section and i want to connect the Apple TV to my macs External HDD.

Ive tried to use the zeroconfg and it finds my mac but when i select it nothing happens and it doesn't take me in to browse the folders. Is there anything i can do to solve this ?

Secondly, if i can't use this can someone give me a real nooobs guide to SMB or AFP or whatever system you think would be best suited to my needs?

Hope that is all solvable and i would love to be able to sort this.

On Lion you can't use SMB any more because Apple broke it.
You still have afp, webdav, ftp and nfs available.

Have a look at http://wiki.xbmc.org/index.php?title=File_sharing

If you are just starting with xbmc I would recommend starting simple and then adding all the bells and whistles on.

Start with a basic install with no add-ons and get the library working. Add one source and get it working properly before moving on. You have a webdav source that is half working. XBMC sees the directories with but can't see the content in them. Does the user ipaduser have enough permission to access the files in the webdav share?

For the afp stuff:

Im currently using Media Master Server as recommended on here as a quick fix but I've found it to be very unstable when transferring large data packets. Since i scraped for data it has caused it to crash the app hence looking for a more stable fix.

I only have one user on this laptop and a guest so could this be the problem ? I am fairly competent with computers etc just need a guide to follow really. I have got as far as my Apple TV2 can see my macbook pro but it won't let me access the files within. So if there is a manual way to make a connection that i what I'm looking for please Big Grin

Hope this can be solved. On my log i noticed cannot authenticate UAM or something similar to that which seems to come up a lot in posts. I wonder if this is whats causing the hassle ?
Thanks again

The user authentication method is anonymous (user everyone) on afp unless you specify the username and password manually for the source.

If anonymous auth is used the permissions for "everyone" need to be very high so that it can access the share fully. There may also be problems accessing Alan external drive through afp. Try sharing something on a local disk using as much permission as you can shove into it. If that works try whittling it down.

There is an example of an afp source in the afp thread. Modify you sources.xml to use either your username and password or add another real user to the mac. Give that user some hefty rights to the data you are sharing.
