XBMC Stalling/Hanging
#1
Been using XBMC for about 8 months now under Win7 64Bit and never really had many probs until about 5 days ago.

I am finding that sometimes when I stop a movie, or click to switch directories for files both on the main drive running the OS and a secondary drive with most of the files... the system hangs for up to a minute, maybe more, then works fine for a few minutes, then hangs again.

I know if the secondary drive hasn't been in use for a while, switching to it hangs for about 20sec while it spins up, but, not on the primary and never when stopping playback.

Nothing new installed, no discs in the DVD drives. I'll reboot the system, make sure nothing is open except XBMC and eventually it starts doing it again.

Virus scans are clean, checked for spyware, startup files are fine, not running anything it shouldn't be and all other programs are running fine.

Any ideas?

Can you post a log? Lot's of scraper/addon issues lately - might be one of those. Might show up in the log and save a lot of guesswork.

Did it for 5 days straight, I go away for 2 days, come back... and now hasn't done it since I posted.

If it does I'll grab the log.

Been having a weird week or two with this thing... one day EventGhost just went weird, had to re-install it and random events I programmed were gone, had to go through and reprogram half my keys. Then a day or two later had XBMC issues.

Nothing new installed, when I use the PC for other stuff it's totally fine.

Can't wait to get a new system, gut this one into a nice AV desktop case, format the drive, re-install with the absolute bare essential, keep the media server separate from my home/work system... just saving up for a core i3 MAC tower, may take a while. Laugh

Not a debug log. Enable debug logging (Settings->System->Debugging) and try again. Please do not post inline - use pastebin.ca or similar.
Always read the XBMC online-manual, FAQ and search the forum before posting.
Do not e-mail XBMC-Team members directly asking for support. Read/follow the forum rules.
For troubleshooting and bug reporting please make sure you read this first.

Was fine a few weeks... started again today. Tried a reboot and same deal. Enabled debugging, happened again within a few minutes, soon as it did I shut off XBMC and copied the log file so, the hang occurs near the end.

Is it here that the pause happened?

Unfortunately the log doesn't give any clues. Does it always hang if you reboot the PC then try and open C:\Users\Thomas\Videos\TV Shows\Shameless (US)\Season 2 ? If so, maybe there's something in this folder that is puzzling XBMC?

No... no rhyme nor reason. It happens when switching directories, happens on both the main drive and the secondary drive (both SATA 3gb/s), and sometimes watching a movie, it plays fine but when it stops the screen locks up for 20-30sec before returning back to the directory listing.

I'll reboot, try again, same problem... then outta no where just works fine. So far today having no issues at all.

Recent issue. Reg/Startup is clean. Checked to see if maybe a virus scan was running at the time but doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe will fix itself? or with the new XBMC... which I'll install once the final/stable version gets released.

Just a wild stab but can you go through your Power Saving settings and make sure that the drives don't get shut down? Basically set everything up for maximum performance, no powering down/sleep/hibernate/turning off HDD's.

Yup, those are shut down... plus the main drive does it which is running the system/xbmc. As well, it will randomly hang when a movie/show ends, which, obviously the drive isn't shut down for those since was just watching the video.

... it's a strange one.

Tomorrow I'm changing some hardware, newer motherboard with faster SATA ports, switching from 2Gb to 4GB ram, and switching my DualCore 3.4, to a Core2Duo 2.4. Maybe some speed will help, maybe just a case of system getting some lag. Figured a few cheap upgrades may help... didn't want to spend too much money since this system has been doing fine for almost a year now, just, wanted to add a little to it.
