Apologies in advance if this has been discussed before. But I think it would be useful to have the video library scraper as a standalone utility, preferably written in python so easily portable. Then suppose you have both media and the SQL database living on the same nas, you could have the library scraper running constantly, using Inotify to pick up changes and update appropriately.

Any strong opinions?

I do agree.
I have a headless server acting as nas, sql server and VDR.
It will be very usefull to have a standalone scraper running on that server so that XBMC "satellites" should not have to scrape new files when switched on, now i have installed the ddon to automatically scrape new media on a time basis but this is working nly when the htpc is switched on and "waste" cpu power of my ION when i have plenty of cpu power on an olways-on server that can be used for that.
The scrape can be initialized both by inotify or by sceduling the execution.
