another HDMI audio thread...

I've been trawling through posts to try to find a 100% guaranteed solution to this and have exhausted all the possibilities.
My receiver only has 1 optical input which I used to have the ATV2 as the input.
Now I need that to be my Sky box.
So I have to use HDMI audio for the ATV2
No combination of settings seems to work for me, I've tried:
  • Dolby Digital On Off and Auto
  • Audio Auto or 16 bit
  • XBMC output HDMI or Optical
  • XBMC DTS/DD capable receiver on and off
I've tried DTS DD and Stereo sources, all put out white noise to my speakers.

Im on
Apple TV Software: 4.2.2 (2203)
XBMC: Eden Beta 3

Can anyone tell me what the settings theoretically SHOULD be?
I would have thought these would be them, and can anyone tell me why they don't work?
Dolby Digital - On
Audio Output - Auto
XBMC Audio Output - HDMI
XBMC DTS/DD capable receiver - On
XBMC Speaker Configuration - 5.1

Thanks for any time spent helping

And it worked before with optical? Well i don't have to change anything when switching between optical and hdmi on my amp. Even the switch between hdmi and optical coax isn't needed because on ios it doesn't have any effect (sound comes out on both allways).

Imho 16bit audio, dts,ac3 receiver are the right settings (and the speakersetup you have - e.x. 5.1).

What amp is it?

yeah it was all working perfectly with optical
my receiver is Denon AVR-1311

my current settings are
Dolby Digital - On
Audio - 16 bit
XBMC:
Audio Output - HDMI
Speaker Configuration - 5.1
Boost volume level - off
DD/DTS capable receiver - on

when I play any source i get white noise
and my receiver doesn't indicate a change in source either!
thanks

interesting point:
I plugged the optical lead back in, and set my receiver to put it out to the speakers and everything worked correctly, even when switching from DD to DTS and Stereo sources

the really interesting point:
when playing a DTS movie through optical, if I switch my receiver to receive the HDMI audio it was working (instead of giving me white noise!) and continued to work even when changing to a DD movie and stereo.

the bad point:
When I switched my receiver off and on again I was back to white noise

seems that I have to trick it into working with optical first before the HDMI signal will work!

I have a Denon AVR-791, and I can tell you that there are myriad settings that can go wrong on one of these. I would try doing a factory reset/microprocessor reset on the amp.
