Help to getting on track with a (maybe) new setup
#1
Hi community,

I did read a lot in this forum but I am still lost. I just can't nail it down which road I should go. :-(

My current setup:
  • QNAP TS-209 II Turbo NAS (working room)
    • RAID 1
    • File Server
    • FTP Server
    • SABnzbd+
    • MySQL for XBMC Library
    • Thumbnails for XBMC
  • ZOTAC ZBOX ID41 (living room)
    • XBMC Live (10.1 “Dharma”)
  • Windows 7 64bit (working room)
    • XBMC (11.0 “Eden” Beta 3)
  • iPhone 4

Now my QNAP reaches his limits (storage & function wise) and I like to replace it with a new device. To keep up the current setup a new NAS would be enough but I like to enhance my setup. What I additional like to do is:

  1. Email, calendar, etc. pushed to mobile phone
  2. Check private Email, Calendar from work (web interface)
  3. Look up my media library with mobile phone when I am on the road. (Constellation)
  4. Look up my media library etc. on a friend’s computer (Maraschino)

Point 1 & 2 requires a "real" Server and not a NAS and point 3 & 4 needs a XBMC running 24/7 as there is no (as far I know) server / client setup. The idea is to combine all 4 points in one device. (and sell the Zotac) The other solution to run both devices 24/7 is no option.

The living and working room are next to each other so a 3 meter HDMI cable would be all to get the data to the A/V Receiver. The main question is:

Can XBMC be run on a server environment 24/7?
If yes then a couple of question pop into my mind which I can't answer myself 100%.
  • Prebuild or DIY server? (prefer Prebuild like HP Microserver)
  • What do I see on the TV when I turn on my A/V Receiver? Hopefully only XBMC opened.
    • Possible solution: XBMC running in a virtual machine?
  • What operation system?
    • WHS is not expensive but has no Email function.
    • Windows Server 2008 R2 has no Email function but the OS itself I could get from work.
    • Windows SBS 2011 is too expensive.
    • Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS - Missing mobile phone feature.
    • Zentyal Linux small business server (Includes Zarafa)
  • What Email program?

Sorry for the very long post.
