I know it's not much, but I'm trying to cut down the cost as much as possible. Is it really necessary? Does it get really hot w/o it?

I have almost the exact same build you linked to and I kept the fan as part of the build. My temps without it were about 5-10 degrees higher than with under full load. Additionally, I have it stored in a semi-closed area, so airflow was essential for me. While you could save $15 or so by excluding it, I would rather have it and not worry about then constantly check for temps and end up getting one a couple of weeks later anyway. Just my $0.02. Maybe others can comment on their specific builds/temps. Good luck and enjoy your build.
