Is is possible to set up XBMC to cache videos from a network share?

I have an xbmc set up with a VPN connection back to my home server. It works with standard definition, but HD is choppy and buffers a lot.

No.

The caching wouldn't help anyway. You'd have to cache for half an hour before starting playback to get any useful benefit. The problem is simply that your VPN is too slow for HD video.
