New nettop for 30GB mkv's
#1
I am looking to get a nettop that i will only be running xbmc on and plan on watching 30GB blu ray rips on. I have them stored on an external hard disk so will connect it up via usb.

I have seen the Revo R3700 but am abit concerned it maybe abit under powered.

I need some suggestions as what would be best. It would be nice if it had usb 3, wifi, not worried about optical drive, and preferably fanless as silent running is important.

Didnt really want to spend much more than £250

Any suggestions?

The zbox range is certainly looking pretty good, I may wait and see what the ID80 price is like when it comes out. Does anyone have any experience with using zbox range?

I run an AD02 as my main XBMC in my lounge and am pretty happy with it. Its quieter than my Revo 3610.

I don't have any 30Gb BD rips, but I do have a a few around 20Gb which play flawlessly on my Shuttle (see sig).

For the sake of informing you, I just put on Gladiator - h264 mkv 1920x816 24fps, some 20Mb/s max (+ audio) and file size 18.55 Gb - and watched through parts of the first battle scene with plenty motion, some fire balls and all that stuff.

Tbh I don't quite believe it myself, but if I understand the XBMC load reporting right, we're talking about CPU and GPU (ION) load hovering around 10% throughout and I never saw any of them even getting close to 20%.

Ergo: If you want fanless, XS35GT is probably an option (mine is v1 with D510, currently sold are v2 with D525).

I have 40 and 50GB BD ISO's playing using a Revo 3610 so if you really want that box then it will cope fine!

That would then also answer if the Shuttle could, since the 3610 came with Atom 330/ION and the XS35GT comes with Atom 525/ION2.

Well its good to know that the revo will do what i want i am now really considering that. Just really want to know when the zbox ID80 & ID81 are going to be available and how much as they have abit more power and USB3 which would be nice.

Once of my HTPC's is a zbox nd22, I have no complaints about it.

Pretty much decided on the ID81 after seeing the price on amazon, hopefully its going to be better than the ID80. The processor is faster in the ID81 and i think the intel graphics will be more than enough to play movies.

I think the nvidia graphics in the ID80 are probably only going to be beneficial if i use it for something other than a media box.

If anyone wants to save me from making a big mistake it looks like it might be a month or so until its available so any last minute advise would be appreciated.

Any ideas how silent these boxes will be?
