I have 5 systems all running 10.1 with a shared MySQL database. When I am ready to move to Eden (11.0) will the database be compatible and be as simple as installing the new version?

Yes, but ONLY if you follow the instructions on the wiki:

In particular, make sure your mysql user has permissions to create databases.
XBMC will then make a copy of your Dharma database (with the default naming it'll go to xbmc_video60) and then update that copy to Eden compatible. This may take some time, so make sure you give XBMC plenty of time to complete that on first run before you start thinking that something is screwed up - stopping it mid-flow will almost certainly screw it up
