I'd like a sample to test.

You can use any mp3. Latest song i tested was caught somewhere in time by iron maiden, lots of gallopping kick drums there.
For the limiter settings see post 23 in this thread.
Separate thread about the limiter is here

no, I want to use something that you can reproduce the issue with. If any of the osx devs have noticed this, it would be fixed already. My setup sounds great with no distortions.
default values for limiterhold is 0.025, limiterrelease is 0.1, put them back to that.

Thanks, i'll test it little bit later on today.
Here's more info just in case your shot in the dark is unsuccessful.
Here's a sample song.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6561811/song.mp3
The kick drum is very prominent throughout the song. When ever kick drum hits everything gets very "flat", when the kick drum hit passes everything is well again. So the volume is going back and forth. Notice at 20-25 seconds there's a guitar part with a vibrato, without those advanced settings (limiter at zero) this vibrato sounds much more powerful because of the volume changing.
If you compare the simple volume levels with and without the advanced settings there's a huge difference in volume level.
I'm not too picky about the audio quality usually but even i noticed this.. I don't have any fancy equipment either, cheap Denon receiver and Orb speakers and a BKElec sub.
My OSX volume is at max like it's always been, XBMC volume at max, amp at around -40db. Audio midi set to 2ch.

thus we can easily turn this around and blame you! it's all your fault for not reporting it!!!11 not fair eh? that's right, it wouldn't be. and the other way around is even more unfair. the devs who focus on osx and who put all their hard work into xbmc, do not deserve random non-contribution guys to tell them they do not focus on output quality due to some bug slipping in. it's statements like yours that makes me wonder why we don't just quit doing this thing all together.
Apologies Spiff,
My soap-box rant wasn't aimed at anyone in general, and definitely NOT at the developers! You guys don't *have* to continue OSX development, so I'm sure we're all very appreciative.
It's just a shame this bug has slipped through the net, I do remember it being mentioned for one of the nighty builds.
I've reverted back to Dharma in the mean time (via Time Machine), but would have liked to work back through the nightlies, seeing where it crept in.
I can't find a page to download all previous builds - I'm sure it's staring me in the face though.

Does this affect XBMC 11 (Eden) on Apple TV too?

Ha, I asked because I plan on buying an Apple TV to load XBMC on it - it the problem exists on it too, then I won't buy it

ok, I'm getting bored with this, you have my attention and no one is testing. One more day then I'm moving on to other things and this issue goes to the bottom of the pile.

Sorry, i had to babysit our puppy dog.
I tested your test build with fresh user data, no advanced settings and the issue is there still.
I went and tested all the earlier releases from Dharma to Eden, and the last build where the audio quality is great is beta 3, in rc1 and forwards it's the same as it is now.
I don't know what what else to tell you, it's really noticeable in my setup. Here is another sample if you don't mind testing. I can hear the difference during the first 2 seconds of the song in the guitar riffs, volume is all over the place from rc1 to Eden. In beta 3 and earliers, and even OSX finder preview it's fine.

Others please test beta3 and confirm if the audio quality is fine for you. Earlier releases can be found at
