ALSA: Copy front L/R audio from HDMI to analog stereo

Greetings,

I would like to know if it is possible to have audio singnals copied from HDMI front left and right channels to a second stereo sound card. I am currently running XMBC from a small Jetway thinPC which has two audio outputs, one via HDMI and the other via 3.5mm stereo jack. HDMI is powered by NVidia chipset while 3.5mm stereo jack is powered by "USB PnP Sound Device".

I would like to use the HDMI for 5.1 sound system in the TV room. At the same time I would like to connect the stereo front L/R channels to a speaker selector box I use to distribute sound throughout different rooms in my house.

I looked at configuring .asoundrc using a combination of 'copy', 'plug', 'route' plugins but I'm afraid it's over my head. I'm not even sure if it's possible?

Using 'speaker-test' I can hear sound on all my speakers:

$speaker-test --device hw:1,0 --channels 2
$speaker-test --device hw:0,7 --channels 6

If there are any ALSA experts out there, I would be greatful for some help.

Thanks.
