Media Server AND FreeNAS?
#1
Hi,

I am planning a NAS server to put in the basement... The ideas right now is to run FreeNAS on this machine...

Is it possible to run a media server a la XBMC on the same machine, ie run them in virtualized environments?

Do I need a HTPC in my living room as well or is the UPnP cable TV enough to access the content on the media server?

Regards,

Tobbe

Just use file sharing in linux or whatever OS you want to use with the HTPC. It doesn't have to be a "NAS-specific" OS for it to work really well. I used my little Windows XP miniITX HTPC as both an XBMC box and as a file server (for both other XBMC boxes and other stuff as well). Also ran torrents and other stuff on there.

UPnP TV won't be enough. You'll want another HTPC. UPnP/DLNA TVs end in sadness.

Hi and thanks for the answer!

The reason for having a separate file server is that I do not want to place a machine with 3-6 disks in the living room... Initially I am planning for 3x 3TB disks giving me a 6TB useable diskspace...

And the reason why I have been looking at FreeNAS is due to the support for ZFS which sounds really nice to me...

Perhaps I need to include separate HTPC in my plans if UPnP/DLNA does not work that well :/

You could run linux on it and use ZFS. You could then use an HDMI-over-ethernet-to-HDMI adapter to run it from another room, complete with an IR extender: http://www.monoprice.com/products/produc...1&format=2

Or get a small nettop box for under $200 for your living room like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...6856119050 (just add ram and run it off a USB drive, since your media is all over the network)

You can even run a jailbroken Apple TV 2 (wiki) with XBMC on it for less than $80.
