It's the ATV2 that can't output 1080p.
The ATV1 with a the broadcom BCM70015 card can output 1080p and even play full uncompressed blu-ray's:

I was in the process of editing my previous post saying that I was wrong. But thank you, that seems like a really good idea plus it will be a fun project

The fast Ethernet should be OK, I stream 1080P with DTS most of the time and I think that it can handle it

I used to run Networked Media Tanks with fast Ethernet and they played full blu-rays (40GB) with DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD no problem.

I didn't know it can playback these formats using XBMC?

What Apple TV do you have again? Where can we find it in U.S?

>HOW-TO Bitstreaming using XBMC
I refused to watch movie without bitstreaming HD audio!

+1
The motherboard/CPU combo's mentioned previously are great fanless devices - but designing a case to be used with passive cooling is non-trivial. I highly recommend purchasing one designed specifically for that use, and the only two I know are one from Habey (I have, it's OK but I don't recommend) and the XS35GT which people rate highly. It is ION based, which some people have had issues with shudder - but I have not. Try your .mkv's on an ION system, and if you're happy with it then the Shuttle is a very good choice.

With the HD card addon it decodes it on the PCI-E card which lets the processor do all the other work for showing XBMC

Yes.
I have an BCM970012 in my current ATV1 and I notice the stutter when a file starts or after seeking and it's annoying but not a total put off.
I've just ordered a BCM970015 this afternoon for another ATV1 I'm doing.

Ok, I just ordered one from a guy in Cali so I wouldnt have to wait 3 weeks to get it from Hong Kong. This seems like it will be the cheapest route, about 160 bucks or so!

Why on earth the ATV1 can output 1080 while the ATV2 doesn't and the ATV3 does ? What's wrong with apple

The Apple TV 3 har been out in a year now. And nobody is currently doing a jailbreak.. So dont hold your breath because the new Apple tv 4 is sooner out than a jailbreak for the number 3. Build it your self! It is great fun! Smile
