Win Installation Error
#1
Had to reinstall windows do to a windows update that crashed my system. When I reinstalled XBMC (Eden then Darhma) I recieve an error when I attempt to start the program.

XBMC:Error
CApplication::Create() failed - check log file that it is writable

cant get past the error to get any logs

any pointers as to a fix would be greatly appreciated. XBMC worked fine prior to this crash and reinstall. I've redownloaded as well as used a previous download for both versions.

Thanks
Curtis

Sounds like you don't have permissions to your own user directory, which is very odd indeed. XBMC tries to create and write data to c:\users\<your_login_name>\appdata\roaming\xbmc

If it cannot create or write to this directory you'll have the issue you have now.
System: XBMC HTPC with HDMI WASAPI & AudioEngine - Denon  AVR-3808CI  - Denon DVD-5900 Universal Player  - Denon DCM-27 CD-Changer
- Sony BDP-S580 Blu-Ray  - X-Box 360  - Android tablet wireless remote - 7.1 Streem/Axiom/Velodyne Surround System
If I have been able to help feel free to add to my reputation +/- below - thanks!

This is usually because the proper video driver isn't installed. We need to see a log file to check. Open the debug log by pressing Windows-R and in the Run dialog type:

"%appdata%\xbmc\xbmc.log"

(including the quotes). Click OK and the log should open in Notepad. Copy and paste the log into http://pastebin.com/ and post the link it gives you here.

I am having the same error. Here is my pastebin

Looks indeed to be a video driver or just that it doesnt support a certain 1200x800 resolution?

Same problem here. I have swapped video cards and installed drivers. Also changed resolution.
Here is the link to the xmbc log file:

Your log shows:

Code:
NOTICE: Found screen: Generic PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, adapter 0.

You don't have the correct video drivers installed. Windows is still using the default driver it installs if it can't find a suitable driver.

I just upgraded my xbmc to v.11 however I'm getting the same error. I checked the log file, or I assume it was the log file and it was read only. I changed it to non read only but am still having the same problem. I tried doing what you suggested in post #5 however it says it "refers to a location that is unavailable".

Idea's?

Did you mean post #3 i.e. the Windows-R stuff? Did you remember to include the inverted commas in the command?

There might be some odd character in your username that's confusing the Run command, but you can get to your userdata folder another way. Press Windows-R and in the Run dialog type:

Code:
C:\users

and click OK and an Explorer window will open. You'll need to enable showing hidden files to get any further. Press the Alt key on the keyboard, and you'll see a menu bar appear at the top of your Explorer window. From this menu bar choose "Tools" then "Folder options". In the "Folder Options" dialog click the "View" tab and enable the option "Show hidden Files, Folders and Drives". Click OK to close the dialog again. Sorry this is such a fuss - blame Microsoft!

Anyhow, in the Explorer window you'll now see a folder for each user. There are built in folders called "Public" and "Default" and there should be one matching your username. Doubleclick on your username and you'll see loads of folders including one called AppData. Doubleclick on AppData, then Roaming, then XBMC, and you'll now see the log file.

XBMC isn't supported in remote desktop. You might get it to work by going to System settings, System, Video output and enabling "User a fullscreen window rather than true fullscreen".

Hi - I'm having the same issue when starting XBMC after a new install on WHS2011 on a HP Microserver N40L - not via remote connection
here's my pastebin

Line 17 of your log shows:

Code:
17.22:05:35 T:5688  NOTICE: Found screen: Generic Non-PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter, adapter 0.

You haven't installed the correct video driver. The "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" is the driver Windows uses if it can't find the correct driver, and the "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter" driver won't work with XBMC. You need to download and install the video driver from the HP web site.
