Win XBMC freezes on startup
#1
Hi! I have the following problem with my XBMC installation:

XBMC completely freezes on startup since today after running just fine for approx. 2 months. I allready restarted the pc several times and also cleared the C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\cache folder. Last addon I installed was Livestreams but after that the system worked just fine. Please help!

We need to see a debug log. You'll have to enable debug logging manually since XBMC won't start, but this is easy to do.

Press Windows-R and in the Run dialog type:

Code:
notepad "%appdata%\xbmc\userdata\advancedsettings.xml"

and click OK, and answer Yes when Notepad asks if you want to create a new file. Copy and paste the following into Notepad:

Code:
<advancedsettings>
  <loglevel>1</loglevel>
</advancedsettings>

Close Notepad and save the changes. Now start XBMC and when it crashes copy the log to http://pastebin.com/ (dont post it here) and post the link here.

Hi jhsrennie and thanks for your reply!

I did as you told and following is the link to the paste: http://pastebin.com/GiGHsCkW
Before I did this I also uninstalled XBMC (keeping the profile data), restarted and reinstalled it. Still the problem exists. I think it's a python error (see line #688)

Is it possible to deactivate single add-ons via config files or something like that?

Again: Thank you very much for your help!

P.S.: I might be going to complete uninstall XBMC and the profile data and reinstall it now as I'd really watch Game of Thrones Smile Gonna make a restore point and a backup before I do so, so I can roll back for further problem-solving in case that fixes it.

Update: That apparently solved the problem completely. Everything works fine for now. Again, as I said: If the problem is not clearly evident from the log file and we need further testing, I am willing to roll back my system to the troublesome XBMC installation.

Thanks again! I'm now off watching GoT ;-)

Hi,

I installed XBMC for the first time a few days ago and I've been having this problem too. I'll try to get a log of this later and post same.

@seanp25: Thanks for finding this thread and helping to solve the problem, I'm looking forward to seeing the log. Does your installation also freeze on the first message / post of the RSS feed scrolling through at the bottom?

I'd guess it's the script.gomiso add-on (C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\XBMC\addons\script.gomiso). At least, XBMC crashes immediately after launching it. You can just delete this directory to manually uninstall the add-on.

It doesn't freeze on the RSS feed. Just some more info: I haven't installed any add-ons (only Youtube and the Auto-Updater, but this freeze has been happening since the very first time I ran XBMC after installing it).

It freezes on startup maybe 50% of the time (never immediately after rebooting Windows).

I'm on Windows 7 on a Dell XPS 14z laptop.

Hi jhsrennie!
Yes! It seems you're right. After a day, I had the same problem with my new installation of XBMC shortly after I installed the gomiso add-on. After uninstalling it by deleting the add-on directory, everything worked out fine again.

So, THANK YOU!

If it is up to me, this therad may now very well be closed. Dunno if this solved seanp25's problem, too.

Glad it's sorted out for you janw!

Here's my startup log. XBMC froze on the Eden startup screen, and after a minute or so I get a Windows dialog about XBMC not responding and offering to close it. (although I can't close it without doing a hard restart. If I go to shutdown Windows, it seems to close everything, but then Windows gets stuck on the "Shutting down..." screen)

http://pastebin.com/tGAen6zr

I also have a log saved from a successful XBMC startup. If you ignore the bits about the remote not being found, the next line after "DEBUG: guilib: Fill viewport always for solving rendering passes" in the successful log is "DEBUG: SECTION:LoadDLL(special://xbmcbin/system/libcurl.dll)". Could it be hanging on this?

I don't have gomiso installed, but I'll try deleting my add-on directory (although like I said, I'm sure this happened the first time I ran XBMC after install, without any add-ons installed yet.

Still having this issue with the latest nightly.

Log: http://pastebin.com/xRezVSQc

Another clue maybe: when I look under Processes in Task Manager, "System" is using 25% CPU (ie one full core).

Also, after XBMC hangs, audio output doesn't work any more in any other app (XBMC is still stuck on "Not Responding" in the background. I can't exit it, even using End Process). And opening the Windows sound mixer doesn't seem to work. I'm going to try this with all my sound devices disabled and see if it still hangs, then enable them one by one.

It never seems to hang if I run XBMC immediately after rebooting my system. When it hangs, I'm forced to hard power off my system (shutting down Windows normally never completes).

EDIT: Got this info from the Windows dialog, probably not much use though: http://pastebin.com/f5zvs7Sj

Hi guys i'm experiencing same problem with my new HTPC. I'm following and using xbmc from the version 10 and i've never had this problem before.

XBMC ver 11.0 Eden

I startup my pc, automatically start xbmc and after few keypress on my remote XBMC freeze windows. I need to switch off the pc to solve. I try to unistall and deleting profile folder too but nothing to do.

Here's my debug log: http://pastebin.com/7V2cePW4

I can't see anything obvious in the log. Did XBMC freeze when recording this log? It looks as if you used TeamViewer and pressed alt-F4 to end XBMC. Can you record a log showing a freeze?

I have the same exact issue you guys are having with my Dell XPS 14Z. I have installed it on atleast 3 other computers without any problems. I tried to set up logs, but the logs are not writing to the newly created "advancedsettings" file in my appdata directory.

Please help! Love the software and need it on this laptop.

Update:

I was troubleshooting the issue for again today. I think I fixed it. Here is what I did to get XBMC 11 to work.
1. Uninstalled the Intel driver, uninstalled and reinstalled XBMC without any luck.
2. Uninstalled the Nvidia driver and had the same results.
3. Reinstalled both drivers and now it works.

I also am having the same problem - running on Win7 on Toshiba L775-111 and it hangs on startup. The last entry in the log is same as seanp25 is seeing. I've tried uninstalling (including removing the profile directory) and reinstalling but the problem persists.

Full history - I did a fresh first-time install, enabled Airplay, played a few videos/photos from an iPhone, then it hung and the PC needed rebooting. I'm very keen to get XMBC working (it looked great for the 10 minutes I was able to use it!), any advice appreciated.

Because I can't reproduce this the only way to attack the problem is for me to do a custom build of Eden with extra logging around the bit of the code that's crashing. You would have to download the modified XBMC.exe and copy it into the Eden installation directory. If you want to have a go let me know and I'll create the custom build.
