Linux XBMC on Ubuntu 10.10 and 3TB USB Harddrive
#1
Hi

I woul like to buy a new 3TB USB HDD for my XBMC Nettop running Ubuntu 10.10 and XBMC. I googled but did not find any info if the USB HDD (http://geizhals.at/540859) will be recognized by Ubuntu 10.10.

As far as i had found out the Seagate Drives USB Adapter uses a Sector hack or something wich makes it usable for older OS. Some posts i read say that this adapter makes problems with Ubuntu Linux.

Is there anyone who uses a 3TB USB HDD under Ubuntu?

I use (and boot from) a 3TB WD Green Caviar. I have no problems with it. I have Ubuntu 11.10 Minimal.
You just have to set your HDD with GPT (Gnu Partition Table), then it's no problem.I don't know if Ubuntu does that by default or if you have to use a tool like gparted.
Afaik you won't have any problems with Linux and 3TB HDD's.

But I'm not very versed in such Hardware near questions and I have no experience with such 'old' Linux versions. These is just what I read when I was facing this problem.

I think that there aren't problems with kernel shipped with ubuntu 10.10 and GPT partitions. Follow this guide http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/fdisk-unab...r-2tb.html to properly format the 3TB hard disk.
