Oneiric and Eden ... very confused!?
#1
I tried to upgrade an existing HTPC to the latest release version of Ubuntu (11.10 - Oneiric) and the latest stable version of XBMC and I'm at a loss at to why it's not working.

I started with a completely fresh install of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit got all the latest updates for it. I added the following to the software sources found at https://launchpad.net/~team-xbmc/+archive/ppa:

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/team-xbmc/ppa/ubuntu oneiric main

And I imported the associated signing key

Tried this one as well found at https://launchpad.net/~nathan-renniewald...bmc-stable.

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/nathan-renniewa...ble/ubuntu oneiric main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/nathan-renniewa...ble/ubuntu oneiric main

Imported the associated signing key for that as well

When I go to the update manager and reload it says there's nothing to install.

The closest I've come to a finished install is using the command line entries to get and unstable version from team-xbmc that refused to play audio files.

I've done this same procedure numerous times on previous versions of Ubuntu and never had this happen, what am I missing?

Firstly, it's not a good idea to have 2 sources for XBMC - choose one, and delete the other.

The steps you have taken so far are OK as far as I can see. But, have you actually tried to install XBMC as you say "When I go to the update manager and reload it says there's nothing to install." - having an application source listed is not the same as actually installing it.

I guess this is where I getting confused. On past installations I've only ever used final versions from official PPAs so I'd just put those lines in the software sources, open the Synaptic Package Manager, hit reload and mark those new XBMC files for installation.

I can't seem to figure out a similar way to install or remove software in Ubuntu 11.10. What I've found related to the removal of the Synaptic Package Manager says all the functions are in the Ubuntu Software Center but I'll be darned if I can figure out where.

The one install I managed I did with the follow lines entered in the terminal window:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:team-xbmc
sudo apt-get install xbmc

... but it seems to keep installing the unstable version that won't play audio files, but is otherwise okay.

After reading some more I did come to realize the the Synaptic Package Manager could simply be installed on 11.10 so I did.

Used it to try installing from both the above repositories only to find that both allegedly stable versions (2:11.0-0~ppa1~oneiric and 2:11.0~git20120321.feb09-0ubuntu) present the same problem as the "unstable" version I installed with the command lines. Which is that attempting to play any type of audio file yields a message in the lower right corner with a blue box and white letter "i" next the word Playlist and the message "can't find a next item to play" even though no play list is being used.

Audio is fine on video files but audio files won't play regardless the type and location.
