Linux Switching from Windows to Linux Advice for a Newbie
#1
I want to switch from Windows to Linux and wanted to obtain advice on doing this as I have never really setup linux before so would appreciate a newbie guide to get xbmc working with the remote etc.

1. Which version of linux would people recommend to use for a newbie? And should i use x86 or x64.

2. I have an external Microsoft IR receiver and how easy is it to setup under linux? Under windows i use eventghost.

Any help to get me started would be appreciated.

1) Ubuntu either desktop or xbmcbuntu. x86.

2) Should work out of the box, mine does but there is different models.

You can boot the xbmcbuntu cd without installing and test the remote.

Half a year ago I would have said stick with 32bit as e.g. recommended by Ubuntu. Now I recommend 64bit. Not sure but it seems that the number of problems reported has shifted in favor of 64bit.
