Wrong resolution with long VGA cable
#1
Hello everybody...

Now this is a strange one: I have an ION 330 with Xbmcbuntu. It has 2 ports: VGA and HDMI. I use VGA for projector and HDMI for TV.
I have only one cable connected every time. I don 't use them simultaneously.

Everything fine with TV and HDMI, but when I use the vga port this happen:

A) I use a 1,5 mt long cable to connect it to the projector, everything is fine, resolution is up to 1024x768

B) I use a 10 mt long cable to connect: I can get 640x480 max resolution.

The cable seems fine (every pin ok) : if I boot with the 1,5mt cable, wait till xbmc is loaded and then change it with the 10 mt long, there is no problem and I can still see the video on the projector, so the cable is not faulty.

Can someone explain me why is that and how to correct it?

Hi dont know if this helps just found it on google

A VGA cable carries an analog signal,
and the maximum length decreases as the resolution goes up.
so,
1024x768 can run effectively over a 9 meter (30 ft) cable

Did you you mean "can't"?

But, as I written before: if I "lie" to it with the short cable, there is no problem switching the 2 cables after boot... seems only a recognition problem by xbmc (xorg?)

Sounds like either the response signal from the monitor gets spoiled by the cable length, or maybe your long cable has not all pins connected through? A short search on EDID revealed which data gets tranmitted, but I did not quite figure out how...

The ddc signal probably gets distorted because of the long cable, you can add a modeline to xorg.conf to configure the vga output to 1024x768 permanently, no matter what the EDID says.
