IP Controlled Power Strip?
#1
I'm looking for a power strip that I can plug into a router or switch that I can issue an IP command to cycle power. I have a few machines that I log into remotely from work and from time to time one will hang and I would love to be able to cycle their power to force a reboot. I did some googling, but most appear to be for the commercial level (read:expensive). Anyone know of any under $100 solutions?

Maybe not a power strip but I would look into a small UPS. Many have management features such as power cycling.

How about this one? You may want to read the user comments regarding caveats and limitations. For $92, I guess one can't expect everything. I have no experience with this product nor am I affiliated with the vendor. Your post piqued my interest as I wasn't even aware such a device existed.

How willing are you to get your hands dirty? http://forum.sparkfun.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=23402

Could also be done much cheaper with an arduino

I know this is not helpful to the original question, but why are the machines hanging? Maybe time spent solving that would negate the need for the remote power cycle?

What you're looking for is called a switched PDU. APC, tripp lite, liebert and many others make them. I use APC switched pdu's in colocation and they are extremely reliable, have web (ssl),ssh, telnet, and snmp access. You can find 1U models on ebay with ~6-7 ports for as little as $60 occasionally, unfortunately i don't remember the model numbers of some of the older models to link you to. Here is the best option i was able to find on ebay with a quick search: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tripp-Lite-PDUMH...5d32ffdeae

manufacturer link: http://www.tripplite.com/en/products/mod...delID=3495

That particular model functions as an automatic transfer switch as well, which i know you don't need but it also shouldn't get in the way.

How about a different route - X10.

If you have a computer with a serial port that you can get to, get one of these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/X-10-CM11A-Activ...%26ps%3D54

If you don't have a computer with a serial port, you can find USB controllers as well (although I don't know if their APIs are publicly documented).

Use appliance modules to control the power to individual computers. This is probably going to be cheaper than an IP controlled PDU. Gives you lots of flexibility as well. I use something similar to control my Christmas lights.

I totally agree with Gomez. You can use appliance modules to control the power to individual computers as it will provide lots of flexibility as well and will prove to be cheaper than an IP controlled PDU.

Spoken like a great troubleshooter of computer problems.
I agree,....if you don't try to find out why this machine is hanging,..the machine could potentially hang and never come back.

I had a machine that shutdown for no apparent reason,..and so infrequently,..I thought it was soemthing else.
Turns out,..a loose wire would get caught in the CPU fan, but most of the time it would get knocked out.
But the one time per month (or less) that it got caught,..the CPU would overheat and go into thermal shutdown.

Fotunately, I took everything apart and found it.

I have a couple of the Aviosys IP9258S switches. They work well and allow you to control four devices independently and are relatively inexpensive. There are also rack mounted versions (or 8 switch versions) for professional rather than home installations. The full range is here: http://www.aviosys.com/ippower.html

There's also an Android app that you can use to control upto 8 devices directly, without having to use the web interface: https://play.google.com/store/apps/detai...id.PowerIP
