Advice on a Virtualization set up
#1
Hi Guys

My current server set up is:-

HP Microserver N36L
4GB DDR3 RAM (soon to be 8GB)
1 x 160GB Hard Drive (Ubuntu Server)
4 x 250GB Hard Drives in software RAID 5 (for Music and Photos only)
HVR2200 Dual DVB-T tuner card

The software I'm running on it is:-
MySQL (for 2 Openelec machines)
Sickbeard
Couchpotato
Headphones
Sabnzbd
Subsonic
TVheadend (not reliable for me though)
MDADM (managing my RAID array)

All my video is saved on a 4TB NAS.

I was thinking about running Mythbuntu as my backend TV server because TVheadend just isn't reliable for me (TV card seems to hang from time to time and usually requires a reboot of the server). At the same time it could do with a rebuild as I like to tinker too much.

I was thinking about maybe running a couple of machines in a vitalized set-up using something like ESXI. This way I could just run a virtual machine if I wanted to test something and remove it when I'm finished. It also means I could separate Myth from the other software and not have to reboot everything if Myth was to go down and vice versa. Would this set up work? Would Myth even work in a virtual environment? I'm guessing speed will be an issue as with the number of virtual machines running but would the impact on Myth be too much?

Thanks in advance for your advice.
