OS X One of my series is heard but not seen (nightly XBMC)
#1
Hello,

As the title indicates, I have a set of files which comes from a blu-ray source which I can hear the sound just fine, but the video is all greenish and distorted, very unviewable. I used to be able to watch these episodes in Eden 11.0. I thought I would bring it to your attention and provide a XBMC.log file.

Mac Mini 2011, HDMI, OSX Lion (updated) and XBMC nightly 20120528-64fd446.

I hope you will be able to fix it. :-)

Thank you for reading.

PS! I have to add that apart from this series, XBMC is better at handling various audio/video codecs now. Other series that did not play before works now.

Which show is it? I see Hyouka being played in your log. Is that the problematic show? (note to self, need to catch up on Hyouka)

[email protected] with 6 frames for a 1920 x 1080 progressive video is out of spec, if you have vda on, turn it off and try this video again. Your xbmc.log is strange, debug is there but I do not see the usual video playback logging.

I can't seem to find any references to vda in OSX settings or XBMC (nightly) settings. My Mac Mini has a Radeon HD 6630M if that helps. If I start Eden without changing anything, then the video is fine for these episodes. To be accurate, it does show similar green distortions on some of my playback attempts, but trying again usually fixes it on Eden. I can make a new log for you, if you want?

New log files are attached.

XBMC Eden Log This one has two playbacks of the file, the first playback is distorted and the second playback is fine.

XBMC Nightly Log This log has about 4-5 playback attempts or so of the same file, and all of them are distorted.

I found this: "VDADecoder:yes" in the log, but I've not yet discovered where I can turn it off.

Settings -> Videos -> Playback -> Allow hardware acceleration

I think I was too tired last night to see it, although I expected it to be in Video Output. Thank you. :-)

The series plays fine with VDA off, but the CPU usage goes up quite a bit. Ah well, I guess there is no way around this?

Pretty much. Apple's hardware video decoding APIs are a bit limite on what they will play, while CPU playback is only limited by the codecs in the ffmpeglib. Funny thing is, the exact same hardware will often work with hardware video decoding with far more formats/codecs when ran under Linux or Windows, so the limitation is just an Applle software thing.

That is sad. Usually power saving and heat/fan management is better when Apple hardware runs OSX, though. At least with the laptops I have tried. Definitely not putting Windows on the Mini, but maybe Linux. Hmm.

How about an option to have XBMC automatically turn VDA off if there are incompatible codecs being played, is that possible? And turn it on again afterwards?

The term "incompatible codecs" is vague and fuzzy as it also depends on which GPU is present, nvidia's seem to perform the best, followed by ATI, then Intel.

I'd rather avoid a huge matrix of code to grep a bunch of info then fault vda open if it can't handle it.
